Love Your Home, Love Yourself: Creating Spaces That Nurture

Nest DC

Love is in the air as Valentine's season approaches! Or is it... You're probably inundated with love messages in the form of self-care and love for our partners, but do you still need some inspiration to get into the spirit?

How about a fresh take?

For the love of our local DMV residents and clients alike, we share the message of spreading love within your homes. For yourself, for the lovely others you live with, and for the love of the space you occupy together.

The Science of Loving Spaces
Before diving into specific ideas, it's worth noting that creating intentional spaces isn't just about aesthetics – it's about wellbeing.
Research shows that our environment has a real impact on our mental health and daily experience. When we craft spaces with intention, we're actually practicing a form of self-care that ripples out to affect everyone who enters our home.

Here are some ideas that might hit just right to inspire you in your home this Valentine's day:

A Space for Yourself:
Let's start small. A space just for you, hyper-focused on something that makes you feel perfectly you. Maybe you can dump the junk in your nightstand and refresh it with only items that help you unwind in the evening. Same idea for your bathroom space. Out with what doesn't get used and carefully store, organize, and collect items that help you get ready before bed and in the morning.

Consider these additions to your personal space:

  • Create a "morning corner" with everything you need for your first peaceful moments: a cozy chair, space for your coffee or tea, perhaps a journal, and good lighting
  • Design a meditation or yoga nook with cushions, calming scents, and minimal distractions
  • Set up a creative station with art supplies, writing materials, or crafting tools
  • Transform a windowsill into a mini garden sanctuary with low-maintenance plants
  • Create a personalized book nook or customized coffee bar
  • Revamp your indoor gym with intentional organization and inspiration

Pro Tip: When organizing your personal space, follow the "90/90 rule" – if you haven't used something in 90 days and don't plan to use it in the next 90, it's probably time to let it go. And don't forget to check those product expiration dates – most products have a 3m or 6m on the back, indicating their shelf life.

A Space for the People You Love:
It doesn't have to cost much to create space in your home for someone you love! Have a partner? Help them create a space for themselves as you did. They might want to decide which items are included, but you can do the dirty work by cleaning up and preparing the space.

Consider these loving additions:

  • Create a "family command center" with calendars, message boards, and storage for each person's daily essentials
  • Design a cozy reading corner with comfortable seating for story time with kids
  • Set up a pet grooming station with all supplies in one place, making care routines easier and more enjoyable
  • Create a hobby zone where family members can work on projects together
  • Design pet stations for your furry friends, making play time and clean-up accessible and fun
  • Create special spaces for children's interests, like a small table for legos or arts and crafts

Space to Spend Together:
This one gives us the feels. Whether you are home in your personal space or share it with others, you can spend a couple of intentional moments creating an environment that builds relationships.

Ideas for shared spaces:

  • Design a "device-free zone" with comfortable seating arranged for face-to-face interaction
  • Create a family gallery wall that celebrates special memories
  • Set up a cooking station where multiple people can help prepare meals together
  • Establish a "weekend corner" with puzzles, games, and activities that encourage togetherness
  • Build a board game collection
  • Invest in fun kitchenware for hosting
  • Arrange furniture with a focus on conversations
  • Store comfy blankets and pillows for cozy gathering times

Making It Sustainable: The key to maintaining these loving spaces is creating systems that work with your lifestyle. Start small, focusing on one area at a time. Consider seasonal refreshes to keep spaces functional and inspiring throughout the year. Remember, these spaces should reduce stress, not create more of it.

Our nests are the backdrops of our lives! We can use them to love ourselves, our households, and our guests. Your home is more than just a place to store your belongings – it's a canvas for creating the life you want to live. By thoughtfully designing spaces that nurture both solitude and togetherness, you're investing in your wellbeing and the relationships that matter most. We can all use more love in our lives; adding it to our homes is a gift that will continue to impact us and those we love.
